Estimating Coverage in Cubic Yards
1. Width x Length = Square Feet
2. Choose the desired depth of material (convert inches to feet)
1” = .08 ft
2” = .16 ft
3” = .25 ft
4” = .33 ft
5” = .42 ft
6” = .50 ft
7” = .58 ft
8” = .67 ft
9” = .75 ft
3. Square Feet x Depth (in feet) = Cubic Feet (length x width x depth)
4. Divide Cubic Feet by 27 to get Cubic Yards
Example:
An area 80’ wide by 4’ long with 3” thick:
80’ x 4’ = 320’ sf
3” thick = 0.25’
320’ sf x 0.25’ = 80 Cubic Feet
80 Cubic Feet / 27 = 2.96 cubic yards
Note: It is recommended to use 4” of mulch for initial coverage; 2” to top up.
3” minimum of decorative stone is recommended for good coverage.
